Although this method of study is simple, it is very powerful and can lead to a deeper understanding and application of God’s word.
- Firstly, write out the verse in one or more translations. The aim of this study is to form your own understanding of the verse so try to avoid using a paraphrase which will give someone else’s view.
- Next, rewrite the verse in your own words as you understand it. Don’t try to be “theological” or look for hidden meanings, the best way to look at the verse is with a straight forward reading of its meaning. Think about what the verse commands, or teaches, promises or warns about. If you want to refer to a commentry or Bble notes, try to do this after you have written your own thoughts.
- Then look at the verses immediately before and after the verse which help to place your verse in context. Write down what these verses say, particularly in relation to the key verse being studied.
- Next, write down any questions you have about anything you have come across in the study so far.
- Finally, write down one or two actions you can take as a result of this verse. These might be changes to your behaviour or to your attitude.
Examples:
VERSE: 1 John 2:15 (ESV) Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. MESSAGE: John makes it clear that if we are to experience God’s love then we must not desire what society has to offer. CONTEXT: (1 John 2: 7-14) Our attitude to our fellow Christians will show whether or not we are truly followers of God (by this shall all men know . . .). (1 John 2: 16-17) What society offers is not from God and will not last but if we are obedient to God we will have eternal life. QUESTIONS: How do I now what are the things of the world? Some are obvious but many are subtle. APPLICATION: I must make a conscious effort to avoid desiring the things society offers and expects me to want. |
